La Noche de los Libros (Book Night), a project by La Fábrica for the Community of Madrid, was created in 2006. Between 2006 and 2010, over 500 activities were held on a single day with more than 400 participants counting musicians, artists and actors. Furthermore, 159 bookshops and 123 libraries took part in order to commemorate April 23rd, Book Day in Madrid.
Every year, readings, music, poetry, theatre, films, games and Internet activities take over bookshops and city streets to turn reading into a party. The bookshops, great meeting places for the evening, remain open until midnight. Classical and ethnic music, jazz and DJs invade the temples of reading for one night, and the shops house encounters between authors and readers in a well-deserved tribute. Literature and music share the show bill in an evening that also offers numerous activities scheduled in libraries, theatres, cafeterias and the street; debates and other acts in the city’s large cultural centres; gatherings on current literary events in smart coffee shops; public readings of texts in Madrid theatres; letters and music; the spoken word, etc.
