PHotoESPAÑA, international photography and visual arts festival, reaches 20th year. In 1998 the first edition of this event took place at a time in which photography did not have its own space in Madrid´s cultural agenda.
Two decades later, with more than 1,400 exhibitions on its back, the festival has created a solid network of public and private collaborators that makes it possible to develop each year a proposal offering exhibitions and activities for professionals and the general public where consolidated figures, as well as new voices in photography, find their place. The Festival´s XX Anniversary was declared Event of Special Public Interest by Nacional Budget Act on 27th of June 2017.
PHotoESPAÑA 2018 will celebrate its upcoming edition from 6th of June to 26thof August and will present 90 exhibitions featuring works by 530 artists, and a programme with 21 activities for professionals and public that will take place in 76 venues.
Cristina de Middel invites us to play with photography in Players
The festival invited the recent recipient of the National Photography Award, Cristina de Middel, to join the 20th-anniversary celebration of the festival with a “carte blanche” featuring five exhibitions proposed by the photographer.
With the theme Players, de Middel has brought together diverse artists that share a view of photography as a ludic and exploratory tool. As she has stated: “There is a need for ludic transgression, ingenuity, and coquetry with freedom, in order to reach beyond the veneration and the norms that has set the pace for a poor development in photography since its creation, especially in comparison to other creative disciplines. In recent years, with new generations and new schools, another species seems to have budded that transgresses the norms without revindicating anything, just out of curiosity, to mix it up in the lab in search for new materials. The selection of artists and exhibitions aims to bring together a maximum of amount of games experimented by artists from all continents, thereby revealing that this is not a western tendency but a true change of paradigm.”
The CentroCentro Cibeles will become the site where two photography teams, the Dutch and Swiss, will measure up in the field of contemporary creation. Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop will bring together proposals by artists that by combing photography with other media opt for experimental processes.
Martin Parr and Cristina de Middel are the curators of Players. Magnum Photographers Watch the Game. This exhibition that will be on show at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica brings together over 150 images by photographers from the agency in which the game is present, either as the subject or in the attitude of the photographers themselves. The exhibition presents the works by Abbas, Raymond Depardon, Susan Meiselas, Alessandra, Sanguinetti, Alex Webb, Olivia Arthur and Carolyn Drake, among others.
The Fernán Gómez. Centro Cultural de la Villa will host the final three carte blanche exhibitions. The Greatest Show on Earth, with images from the Archive of Modern Conflict, portrays the circus subculture where all is possible. The show assembles works beginning with unexpected images that when decontextualised construct a parallel reality.
Samuel Fosso, born in Cameroon, will be the protagonist of the only individual exhibition in Players. Odyssey is a complete retrospective of this artist who uses self-portraits at his means of expression.
Lastly, Grand World Final will bring together six representatives from five contents that will rebel against the laws of nature and of photography. Hachim Benohoudson, Miguel Calderón, Anna Hell, Jason Fulford, Robert Zhao Renhui, Prue Stent, and Honey Long will offer a varied and balanced collection of proposals that uphold the ludic and competitive dimensions present in all games.
Spanish photography and art collections in the Official Section Madrid
Spanish photography, collections, sustainability, and photography as a tool for social protest will be present in the Official Section Madrid.
The Sala Canal de Isabel II will present An Elemental Study of Levante by Ricardo Casas, an intimate look at the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Monserrat Soto will reflect on the construction of our cultural inheritance with Imprimatur at Sala Alcalá 31. The Museo Cerralbo will host the project Repose and Dizziness with which Carmen Calvo, the National Visual Arts Award recipient, recovers photographs found in anonymous family albums from the 40´s and 50´s to decontextualise them with humour and irony. The Museo del Romanticismo will recover the photographic pictorialism of Tomás de Acillona, while the Museo ICO offers a retrospective of the work of Carlos Cánovas with a selection of his most representative series.
Photography collecting will be another central concept in this year´s programme with shows at the Círculo de Bellas Artes and the Museo Lázaro Galdiano.
The Picasso gallery at the Círculo de Bellas Artes will take an in-depth look at the history of Russia during the first half of the 20th century with nearly 300 photographs from the Archivo Lafuente collection in the exhibition The Soviet Century. The Goya gallery will be submerged in the origins of African photography in The Elegant Senegal during the first half of the 20th century with anonymous images and photographs by the Senegalese photographer Mama Casset. The proposals at the Círculo de Bellas Artes are completed with the project The Great River, in which photography, video, and film come together to explore the phenomena rebellion.
The Museo Lázaro Galdiano will recall the French photographer Luis Masson. The exhibition Discovering Luis Masson, with works from the Fernández Rivero Collection of Vintage Photography, offers an look at the origins of photography through the work of this artist that made an entire topographic study of Spain during the 19th century.
PHotoESPAÑA 2018 will also be mindful of ideas regarding sustainability with the exhibition s.m.a.r.t. Paths towards Sustainability, which will bring together at the Real Jardín Botánico the work of several outstanding photography figures to present the great public with the challenges of sustainability. The artists in this show are Sze Tsung Nicolás Leong, James Mollison, Boomoon, Naoya Hatakeyama, Thierry Cohen, Nick Cobbing, and Rodney Graham. During the months in which the exhibition remains in Real Jardín Botánico, an estimate of its environmental impact will be made and the CO2 emissions produced will be compensated with official certificates of clean energy projects, thereby achieving the final balance of zero emissions.
Fashion will be the protagonist of the exhibition Fashion! Spanish Design Though Photography at the Museo del Traje that will pay tribute to Spanish fashion through international photography. The exhibition puts nearly one hundred photographs in dialogue with a score of exclusive designs from the museum´s collection.
The Fundación Canal will bring together in Myths of the 20th Century an extraordinary selection of works by the great British portrait photographer Cecil Beaton. The exhibition offers an overview of the history of 20th-century photography hand and hand with the artist that portrayed, from the British aristocracy to the glamour of fashion; the protagonists of the golden era of Hollywood and the great icons of culture and politics.
The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía will participate with two exhibitions. First Attempts presents works created by the French photographer Marc Pataut between 1981 and 2001, an artist that condemns social injustices with photography. Additionally, They are Reality, Not Subjects presents the activity of the Grupo AFAL, a collective of photographers that were inspired by the Neorealist documentary style and the humanist reportage, the members of which included among others, Alberto Schommer, Carlos Pérez Siquier, Gabriel Cualladó, Gonzalo Juanes, Joan Colom, Julio Ubiña, Leopoldo Pomés, Oriol Maspons, Ramón Masats, and Paco Gómez.
The Biblioteca Nacional will offer two exhibits. The Best Photography Books of the Year that includes a hundred books selected from the open call for entries organised by PHotoESPAÑA, as well as the winning project and twenty finalists of the Book Dummy Award organised by La Fábrica and Photo London. The Camera That Captures Poems is an exhibition in which photography and poetry dialogue within the realm of books.
The Instituto Cervantes presents the exhibition Evolucionaries, which includes a retrospective of the winner of the first edition of the Trajectory Award; the winners and finalists of the Fundación ENAIRE Award; and the works of the three emerging artists recognised in the context of JUST MAD.
Festival Off: 29 galleries in PHotoESPAÑA 2018
The exhibition proposals of 29 galleries in Madrid make up the Festival Off network, which aims to impulse the promotion and development of the photographic market. This section reflects the participative and collaborative spirit of PHotoESPAÑA, a shared project with a great variety of exhibition proposals and spaces. The Festival Off includes projects by William Klein, Cristina de Middel, Nicolás Muller, Isabel Muñoz, Pedro Almodovar, Boamistura, Gabriela Gerosa, and Marcelo Brodsky, among others
Alcalá de Henares, Alcobendas, Santander, Segovia, and Zaragoza are venues of the festival
The Convento de Santa María La Rica in Alcalá de Henares will host the exhibition Checoslovaquia (1968- 1991). From the Prague Spring to the arrival of Soviet troops in the street, the exhibition is a testimony in images hand in hand with great masters of Czech photography during one of the most convulsive periods in 20th-century Europe.
Santander participates for the first time in the Official Selection of the festival with the exhibition Inmense Light, an exhibition that will present 33 images from the ENAIRE Contemporary Art collection. This exhibition will bring together celebrated names in photography including Alberto García–Alix, José Manuel Ballester, Chema Madoz, and Daniel Canogar, with new voices in photography such as Victoria Diehl, Irene Cruz, and Lola Guerrero, who have been incorporated into the collection ENAIRE, thanks to the foundation´s annual photography award.
La Cárcel. Centro de Creación in Segovia will host an exhibition that emphasises the importance of photography as a tool for creating testimonies. Difficult Truths. Photographs from the The New York Times presents some of the most impacting images created by photojournalists for the American newspaper.
Alcobendas will participate with seven exhibitions. The Salvador Allende boulevard will present the exhibition Encounters, which offers a look at a new facet in the work of National Photography Award recipient, José Manuel Ballester. The Centro de Arte Alcobendas will exhibit the work of Juan del Junco, with the exhibition Never-Ending Handbook. A Guide to the Birds of My World; Luis Carlos Tovar, winner of the Descubrimientos PHE Award in 2017; Manuel Franquelo-Giner, with an exhibition that brings together some of his most representative series; Graciela Iturbide, an icon of the contemporary Mexican culture: and the collective exhibition of the works created by the students of the 10th edition of the Master PHotoESPAÑA Programme in Photography at the PHotoESPAÑA International Centre Alcobendas (PIC.A).
In Zaragoza, the exhibition Ars Combinatoria surveys at La Lonja the work of the National Photography Award recipient Chema Madoz. While the Argentinian Marcelo Brodsky will present in 1968. The Fire of Ideas, a project in which texts and photographs are combined to condemn the havoc caused by of the Argentinian dictatorship.
Invited Venues in Madrid
ABC Serrano will present Look at me Spain, an exhibition brought by Accenture that through family portraits shows the changes experienced in Spain in recent decades, with images by Morgana Vargas Llosa, David Tortora y Jaime Travezán. Miguel Ángel García will present at Be The Travel Brand Xperience the exhibition Unfinished Landscape, a journey through the urban landscapes of India. MINI Hub, the new cultural space in the neighbourhood of Malasaña promoted by MINI that is dedicated to the diffusion of contemporary culture and creation, offers an exhibition by Bego Antón and four workshops, two on photobooks and two others on photographs of design products and design. The Goethe Institute shows a selection of photos by Harald Hauswald who portrayed in black and white the East Berlin during the 1980´.
One Shot Hotels will feature a retrospective exhibition of the photographer Jean Marie del Moral, with images created from 1972 to 2017. Delpozo will host the exhibition Swimming Pool, by Maria Svarbova, with images taken in public pools constructed in Slovakia during the Soviet period. The Real Sociedad Fotográfica will bring together works by the members of the Colectivo 28 in the exhibition Change and Modernity. Moreover, IED Madrid will present Dummy Books: a selection of the best photography projects by Instituto Europeo Di Design students.
Biodiversity and environment awareness will be the underlying concepts in the exhibition Biodiversity Moments. A look at our nature an exhibition with which the Ministry of Agriculture for the first time will participate as a venue in the festival. In At the edge of the airport, and with the help of the Envera Foundation and the collaboration of Iberia, Antonio Martín will create in the Gloria Fuertes Cultural Center a story in images of the residents of the neighborhood bordering the Adolfo Suarez Madrid Barajas Airport.
National and international institutions celebrate 20 years of PHotoESPAÑA
To celebrate its twenty years of existence, PHotoESPAÑA will again count on the participation of some of the leading national and international cultural institutions.
In Barcelona, the MACBA will host an exhibition by Melanie Smith, a comprehensive survey of the work by this British artist, bringing together examples of all her forms of expression, from her early sculptures, assemblages, reliefs, and paintings to her works in video, photography, and installation. Es Baluard will offer a complete exploration of the work by the Mallorcan artist, Bernardí Roig, through his audiovisual pieces. The IVAM in Valencia will present the exhibition Case Study: Rodchenko that analysis the radical contributions of this Soviet artist to the world of photography and design.
Many international venues also join the programming of this edition of PHotoESPAÑA. The Helmut Newton Foundation will bring together a selection of works from the photography collection of the editor and gallery owner Carla Sozzani. The Musée Nicéphore – Niépce in Chalon-sur-Saône will present exhibition Une excuse pour regarder, archives 1980 –2000 by Jean-Christian Bourcart. The Musée de L´Elysée in Lausanne will offer an exhibition about Jean Dubuffet through his paintings, architecture models, and tools for working. The Photographers´ Gallery in London will offer a retrospective of the work of Tish Murtha from 1976 to 1991. Also, the Central European House of Photography in Bratislava and the Bec Zmiana Foundation in Warsaw will be joining the programming.
In the United States, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago will present the collective exhibition In Their Own Form, a project that brings together photographs and videos by thirteen African artists.
Cristina de Middel will participate in Fola – Fototeca Latinoamericana in Argentina, with the exhibition Afronautas, a project that begins with the failed attempt of the government of Zambia to develop a space programme in 1964.
Moreover, the festival Lagos Photo will participate with the exhibition Like Ashes by Nguveren Ahua, while Kyotographie will host a retrospective of Masahisa Fukase Play. PHotoESPAÑA 2018 will also be present In Australia, in the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne.
Photography for all publics
PHotoESPAÑA will offer a broad programme of activities for diverse publics that is designed to bring photography to the general public, thanks again to the collaboration of public institutions and private entities.
For the third consecutive year the Forum PHotoESPAÑA Community of Madrid will be converted into a physical and virtual space where photographers and the public can come into contact through exhibitions and meeting places to “to make”, “to speak”, “to listen”, and “to be” with photography. The Sala El Águila will host four exhibitions selected through an open call for entries; while the gardens at the Sala Canal de Isabel II will be a forum in which artists and collectives can speak directly with the public and also exploit the possibilities of social media; in this same space, the leading photography schools of Madrid will organise activities and workshops that introduce the photographic medium to an interested public; and lastly, twelve Spanish and international photographers will take over the social networks of the festival, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to convert them into a platform for promotion and dialogue.
The Fundación Canal will host The Saturday Workshops, where children can engage with the world of photography. Black & Light. Nocturnal open-air projections and installations PHotoESPAÑA – Fundación Banco Sabadell will invite a selection of artists to redefine the natural and architectural spaces at the Real Jardín Botánico, through projections, installations, and photographic mappings.
CNP Partners and PHotoESPAÑA announce a call for photographic gymkhana, #ElCorazónDeLaCiudad, inspired by the carte blache exhibitions. The activity proposes to the visitors to establish a dialogue through images between the content of Players exhibition and the ways of relating in the cities. From June 6 to July 9, all public of PHE18 can build a visual story through #ElCorazónDeLaCiudad. This activity is part of #MásArteMásVida, an initiative of CNP Partners that seeks to promote creativity and imagination through a program of sponsorships and collaborations.
Iberia joins PHotoESPAÑA 2018 with an exhibition of Esteban Pastorino who will offer an original vision of the airplanes from Adolfo Suarez Madrid Barajas airport while they rest in their hangars and also Spotters: a photographic tour of the Madrid airport.
Solán de Cabras collaborates again with the festival with an online contest that invites participates to upload their best images of nature. The winner will receive a grant to participate in the Máster PHotoESPAÑA.
At the Espacio Fundación Telefónica the photographers Cristina de Middel and Martin Parr will participate in a conversation about the activity of the Magnum Photos agency.
Together with the Lanzarote Island Council, there will be a PHotoWalk, a participative and educational activity organised by the festival.
Alcalá de Henares will host a workshop about stage photography with Javier del Real. La Fábrica will organise the PHotoBookWeek, a programme of conferences, presentations, book signings, and workshops, and other activities that bring together artists, publishers, and critics.
Professional activities during the first week of the festival
Descubrimientos PHE, the meeting place for photography professionals, will offer on 7 and 8 June, a programme of activities at the PHotoESPAÑA International Centre Alcobendas PIC.A. Descubrimientos PHE has two days of portfolio reviews that will put photographers in contact with national and international experts. In addition, it will include workshops with the photographer Musuk Nolte, winner of the Elliott Erwitt Havana Club Fellowship in 2017, and the photography curator at the Tate Modern, Sarah Allen. Among that experts that will participate in this year´s programme are Andrea Holzherr, Angeles Imaña Marcos, Angel Gutierrez Valero, Azu Nwagbogu, Barbara Karpf, Christine Ollier, Clement Saccomani, Cosar Kulaksiz, Enrica Vigano, Javier D. Guardiola, Laura Revuelta, Lucía Mendoza, Álvaro Matías, Rein Desle, Rafael Doctor Roncero, Roberto Villalón, Thomas Licek, and Bill Kouwenhoven.
Descubrimientos PHE receives support from the Embassy of Portugal, the Instituto Iberoamericano de Finlandia, and the Instituto Italiano di Cultura.
Trasatlántica and Transeurope: PHotoESPAÑA expands its network in Europe and Latin America
In addition to the exhibitions, PHotoESPAÑA has consolidated over the course of 20 years its role as a meeting place for photography professionals. The network of festival collaborators extends beyond our borders with programs like Trasatlántica, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2018 and Transeurope.
Since it began in 2008, Trasatlántica, an Ibero-American forum photography and visual arts, has connected photographers, researchers, critics, and curators in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Spain, United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Two years ago, Trasatlántica extended its network to the African continent with portfolio reviews, presentations, and activities in Casablanca and Dakar. Last year the programme reached Asia with portfolio reviews in the Philippines. In its 10th edition, with the generous support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation – AECID and its Network of Cultural Centres, as well as local entities, Trasatlántica will return to Africa, organising profile reviews in Morocco.
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, PHotoESPAÑA 2018 has established collaborations with Casa Árabe, Casa América, and Casa Asia, institutions that form part of the Official Section of the festival.
Casa Árabe will host the exhibition In an Instant Morocco, featuring works by the photographers selected for the portfolio reviews held at the Casablanca. Whereas Casa América will present three exhibitions. In Island´s Shadow the Peruvian photographer Musuk Nolte, winner of the Elliott Erwitt Havana Club 7 Fellowship in 2017, explores the emotional landscapes of Cuba and the everyday lives of its inhabitants. This venue will also host the exhibition of the works selected from the portfolio reviews that took place in São Paulo as a part of Trasatántica, and the Exhibition of Contemporary Photography from Uruguay, with ten artists from the country. Casa Asia participates with the project A Photographic Journey Through the Philippines, which will include a panel discussion about current photography in the Philippines, the presentation of the portfolio reviews celebrated in the Philippines in the frame of Trasatlántica, and a conference given by the Philippine filmmaker and photographer Briccio Santos, president of Film ASEAN, who has just published his most recent photography book.
With the same intention of strengthening its professional network in Europe, in the fall of 2017 Transeurope was born, a new European forum for photography and visual arts, which has been made possible with the support from the Europe Creative programme. Transeurope promotes the exchange among European photographers and visual arts professionals. Through photography workshops, portfolio reviews, professional activities, collective exhibitions, and the publication of a magazine, this programme aims to favour the exchange, mobility, and visibility of artists in Scandinavia, to the east and west of the Mediterranean and the Balkans. Within its activities, Transeurope will organise portfolio reviews during May and June in Helsinki, Madrid, and Athens. PHotoESPAÑA has also joined Futures, a new photography platform involving leading European photography institutions.
PHotoESPAÑA Books
La Fábrica will publish, as always, the PHotoESPAÑA 2018 Guide with the complete information about all exhibitions that will take place in this edition, in addition to four catalogues that accompany some of the exhibitions in the festival: Players. Magnum Photographers Watch the Game, with the most ludic images by the most prestigious artists in the agency; Cecil Beaton, Myths of the 20th Century, a monographic volume with a hundred photographs by the great British portrait photographer: Fashion! Spanish Design in Photography, a book in which great international photography masters pay tribute to the leading designers in the history of Spanish couture; and The Soviet Century, a comprehensive volume with images from the Lafuente Archive about the history of Russian photography between 1917 and 1960.
