Escritor y miembro de la Real Academia Española. Se inició como poeta y fue cofundador de la revista Claraboya, desarrollando después una prolífica trayectoria en el campo de la narrativa. Ha recibido, entre otros, el Premio Nacional de Literatura en 1987 y 2000, el de la Crítica en 1986 y 1999, el Premio Castilla y León de las Letras en 2000, el Francisco Umbral al Libro del Año en 2012 y el Premio Nacional de las Letras Españolas en 2020. Entre sus obras destacan La ruina del cielo (1999), La fuente de la edad (1986) o La cabeza en llamas (2012), y más recientemente ha publicado Vicisitudes(2017), El hijo de las cosas (2018) y Juventud de cristal (2019).
